Flash Slideshow On WordPress Theme Header
Every so often I get contacted for WordPress theme customization and the client wants a Flash slideshow somewhere on the site usually the header. I have never incorporated that into a WordPress theme before mainly because I didn’t know how. There is a plugin that that is designed to place a Flash slideshow in a sidebar widget but it can also be used to place it anywhere on the theme. I will warn you that it can be a pain to get everything setup correctly to work on your WordPress header.
The Flashfader Plugin plugin is needed to do this and as I said if you just want to use it in the sidebar there isn’t much to it. But if you want to incorporate Flash into your header then you will need to know a bit about the code on your WordPress theme as well as some graphic editing knowledge. The plugin was brought to my attention by a friend of mine who does graphic design and who I refer people to for custom WordPress and website headers. You can contact Yvonne on her site here: Nightingale Design and check out her blog: Nightingale Design Blog and this one: SheSue Experience to see examples of the Flash WordPress header.

Great resource. There is nowhere that I would need it on my own site, but it is nice to know anyway.
P.S. You can install a plugin called keywordluv that means that people can write “Name@Keywords” in the name field of the comments and it comes out like this.
“Name from Keywords” with keywords being the anchor text.
This is much better then saying “feel free to use your keywords or site name as your name for anchor text”
Flash Slideshow On WordPress Theme Header is great!
The flashfader plugin is a great plugin but I struggled to get it to work properly with the theme i was using.
A great resource and definitely one I will use. Thanks.
Frank Polenose.
I always wanted flash in my website and I think acts as another reminder for me. Thanks!
Finally!
I was waiting for this for a long time! I think this can change the whole website.
I believe that is the plug-in I used for my sister’s blog…It worked great to create a flash slideshow header.
Embedding flash slide show on the header can be so interesting. Blogs can be more interesting with this feature. I agree with you, to do this we have to know about graphic editing and WordPress theme. I’m zero with either and still am learning both of them. There are so many tutorials available to understand graphic editing and WordPress theme. But to embed the flash slide show myself, it will takes months.
Flash slide show embedding is not an easy task. Would be better if hire a pro to do it.
i’m always leery of incorporating too much flash because it sometimes doesn’t add enough value to the user experience to overcome its disadvantages (e.g., not being search engine friendly, increased load times…)
This post is really a must bookmarked for me! Thank you so much.
Just asking, do you use Aweber? If so, can you provide more information on this? I am subscribed to your rss to check if you are going to post something on Aweber.

No I use GetResponse but wish I never started with it and don’t use the feed option with it because of the limited options. Aweber has a lot more options for RSS feed announcements and if I ever switch I would probably use it.
The email feed used here is from FeedBurner.
Nice post, I really think you’re onto something here and your explanation is really easy to follow!
Ok, i just need to clarify something. My homepage slide show is at size 600, 600. Its centered perfectly and everything. If i change it to 1000, 1000, the slide is no longer centered. Its moved to the right side, severely. Is this because of the size?

I suggest you check out the plugins site, I can’t offer any support for it.

I am making a new free wordpress theme and I will surely be recommending this plugin to them as it is a video oriented theme. This type of stuff needs to be implemented at the core wordpress level as it is quite troublesome. But anyway, great work man!!!
Amazing post, this is very detailed.
Any other toys recommendation?
does using flash on your header will make your site harder to load??

Yes, it can cause issues in different versions of browsers. Just because I post how to add a flash header doesn’t mean I condone it. In fact I strongly suggest not using it and as few images as possible too.
great post, something that i need… btw, flash header is a must nowadays to make your site more attractive..
Editing stuff outside of the normal post of side bar areas can be dangerous if you dont know what you’re doing and is certainly best avoided for relative newbies. I always try to find a theme in the first place with the right layout rather than the right features, as i find it easier to add features than alter bits of the layout as you go along.
does the plugin make your site run slower? i have had problems with flash causing my site to experience performance problems.

It doesn’t matter how you do it, adding flash to a site is going to slow it down.
How much of an impact will the plugin have on the page load time?

I don’t know try it and see for yourself.
What levels of customisation does this plugin give the user?

I didn’t write the plugin so I suggest you ask your questions on the plugin site which is linked to in the post.
Great post… i am turning into such a blog nut, keep up the good work and i’ll keep reading
thank you
Thank you! I had been wondering how to do this forever. Finally found your blog and now I’m going to be putting the flash slideshow on my blog.
Does not work under WP 2.9.1. Any comments?

Given how old this post is, the fact that the plugin’s last update was September 2005 and this statement in my post: “I will warn you that it can be a pain to get everything setup correctly to work on your WordPress header” it doesn’t surprise me that there are issues with new versions of WP.
I referred another commenter, and will do the same for you to the plugin’s site Flashfader Plugin. Then try Google or look for a different option. Sorry I didn’t write the plugin.
