WordPress Optimization Guide

This guide is specifically designed for clients of my WordPress Install Service and based on some of the best “must have” plugins and options to make the most out of your WordPress blog. If you want your own optimized self-hosted WordPress blog or if you need WordPress blog optimization please click here: WordPress Install Service.

When you log in to your blog or if you activate the Akismet plugin you may see a warning near the top like this:

Akismet is not active. You must enter your WordPress.com API key for it to work.

Click on it and follow the directions to keep the nasty spammers from adding comments with links to their websites to your blog.

If the warning is not shown click Plugins and click Activate on the right next to Akismet. If it is activated then check your API key by clicking Options, Akismet Configuration.

Use the same API key for the WordPress.com Stats plugin found under Options, WordPress.com Stats.

To obtain an API key you must create a free account on WordPress.com. And it can be very confusing for new WordPress bloggers! Here is a post that explains the difference between your self-hosted WordPress dashboard and the WordPress.com Global dashboard: WordPress API Key Global Dashboard Confusion

Then please carefully read the instructions how to obtain the API key on this post: How To Get A WordPress API Key

Your blog has been search engine optimized, has it’s own Google sitemap that automatically notifies Google when any new posts are made. It also automatically pings all the top services so you need not and should not use any other services to ping your blog.

To better optimize your blog, click Options or Settings, All In One SEO, check, change and or add your Home Title, Home Description, and Home keywords. Then click Update options.

You should also update the About page. To edit a page click Pages and then Edit, click Edit under the title of the page or the title of the page itself. Add your details in here and then click the update button on the right.

After your blog has been properly named and the All In One SEO plugin configured you can claim your blog at Technorati here: Technorati.com

All other instructions and guides can be found in the links below.

Did you download the free ebooks I suggested ? Both the Authority Black Book and Blog Mastermind are excellent free resources about blogging. I don’t have any association with them and the authors will market to you, but they are worth the time and your email address to get them. The links for them can be found here http://www.wordpressmax.com/thanks/

Please keep in mind that as WordPress evolves some of the options you see in the posts below may no longer be relevant, or slightly different now. If you don’t have an option or plugin installed on your blog it is highly likely by design.

Important note for version 2.7 and above!

Most of the guides are based on previous versions of WordPress, the options are similar but getting to them or the names may have changed. In previous versions the main menu was on a top navigation menu and is now on the left sidebar. Menu or module (same thing) names have changed as well, for example Presentation is called Appearance, Options is now called Settings and the Manage menu has been replaced with individual menus for Posts and Pages. The Blogroll is now called Links and it too has it’s own main menu module.

Great this information has been posted with professional approach and has been found successfully encompassing the issues related to wordpress optimization.

Можно я возьму пару цитат, естественно с ссылкой на Ваш блог

Thats a great guide about wordpress but i just want to ask one question about that i had a site on html how can i convert my site of html from wordpress any idea.?

This is a great post I found in this blog. A post to be bookmarked.

Converting a site from HTML to WordPress is not something I can explain in a comment or probably in several posts. There are too many variables involved and would need to be done manually.

Get WordPress running and start learning about it on a test environment. When you figured out your approach to convert to WordPress each old HTML page would need to be manually created in WordPress and then you would either need to use a permalink structure to match the old URLs or use a redirect.

Cool. I’m still new to Wordpress and this has helped me a great deal. I’ve been using blogger before I migrated and I’m really amazed with Wordpress. Regretting I didn’t move earlier. Anyway just wanted to thank you for helping out. Cheers

Thanks for the Detailed Info about Wordpress. Especially the Wordpress API, I was totally unaware of the fact that even wordpress has its API.
Thanks again for the Info

Does feedburner really make that much difference?

Jeff  Replied:

Martin FeedBurner gives more flexibility to your feed for people to choose how to view it including an email subscription as well as subscriber stats. If you read these posts you would learn more about it:

Thanks for all the links with useful info on wordpress. It is a good program to work with, but it can be hard sometimes.

Each time I start a new blog my first choice is Wordpress. For a casual user, I think it’s enough. But for those of us that make money from this, it needs a little bit of tweaking to be optimized for SEO. Overall, I think you have a great resource here, so I bookmarked this page.

I just wanted to say that Jeff did a great job installing my wordpress, plus he added other items to it that I had NO idea about. I don’t know very much about computers, but Jeff did it all for me. I already recommended him to 3 of my friends. If anyone has any doubts about installing wordpress, send Jeff an e-mail. I feel that installing it was not that easy and very confusing to me. Thank God I found Jeff on line. So anyone out there that feels the same way, e-mail Jeff you will not be sorry.

Thanks Jeff

you should read this. Just subscribed to your RSS. Was searching for “business services” when I found “ss Optimization Guide | WordPress Max | WordPress Guides For The Geek Impaired”. Safely bookmarked.

I guess this post has summarized it all. what could be better than this one?

Just came across your blog when searching google for wordpress guide. My last blog was on blogger but I want to do the next one with wordpress. You did a great job! You summarize all the information needed for novice wordpress user. Thank you very much.

Wordpress does offer an ever expanding array of plugins that not only make SEO straightforward, but also offers a manageable CMS platform for publishers.

The ‘ping’ aspect of blogs reduces the work of the SE’s finding new content and there’s the opportunity for a community to increase the content with comments – just like this comment ;-)

Wordpress is by far one of the best CMS there is, i have used it for many different sites for different clients (one of which mentioned this blog) and the tutorials and support for such a big platform make it such a great choice thats easy to learn for the newbie blogger which reduces support time for clients sites.

This is a fantastic resource – especially for newbies to WordPress. I’m going to share it around with a number of different people that DEFINITELY need to read it!

I like very much the writings and pictures and explanations in your adress so I look forward to see your next writings. I congratulate you.

This is a great post, information I could really use. Thank you Word Press is awesome.

this update will makes my sites better…

We think about to use WP for our planed Blog. But WP is very often updating, isnt?

I like wordpress and I shall not cease to wonder the appearance all new and new plugins.

I have never used a wordpress ecom package, for me it’s easier to have the ecom platform (perhaps OSCommerce) in the root folder of the site and then put the wordpress on a subdomain of the domain.

So you end up with blog.domain.com <–wordpress

domain.com <–store

gallery.com <–some images

and so on, I find this also helps with SEO tactics although I am sure someone will argue that using a folder structure is perhaps more popular with the search engines these days.

Hi all…
We just recently converted our blog to WordPress, and tho its a detailed process and takes some time, its really not difficult. WordPress has made this task so simple and with posts like this…you will be an expert in no time!! This is an absolutely fabulous guide.

Thanks so much and appreciate all your work in keeping us informed and educated.

I think there are many advantages and i will use it in my next blog cause now i have already used blogger.

I am new to using wordpress and this guide has helped me out a lot. Thank you

Nice guide, though I think it’s missing a mention for WPCache which is essential to handle traffic spikes.

Great guide for newbies in WP, well done.
With regard to seo plugins, there is another more recent alternative – Platinum SEO Pack, it’s also free and quite versatile. Just search for the name on Google.

Good luck!
Andrew

Agree – very comprehensive guide and a shout out about WPcache would be good as it’s very kind to hosts and servers in general! For those with ambitions of getting front page of Digg or Reddit, WPcache is your buddy – it reduces your website’s “footprint” on the server – basically it uses a lot less of the server since your website data is cached.

Cool. I’m still new to Wordpress and this has helped me a great deal. I’ve been using blogger before I migrated and I’m really amazed with Wordpress. Really helpful post. Thanks

I am so glad I switch over to WP because WP is so much better then Drupal plus I love the nice beautiful themes too!

Wordpress is still number one in my book with plenty of plug-ins and Google love.

It is also one of the best supported platforms out there.

Man you sure did write a lot of posts on wordpress. You seem to realy know what you are doing when it comes to blogging – but I guess we can expect as much because you run a how to wordpress blog.

Wordpess is awesome! I like it because it is simple and straightforward. It takes me like literally 1 hour to get a site setup and loaded with its first two posts. I love it!
