WordPress 2.8.1 Already Released

It didn’t take long for the bugs to get reported and fixed or worked around in WordPress version 2.8. Below is the release right from the WordPress website. It suggests that you upgrade from 2.8 to 2.8.1 as soon as possible to be safe. But I have already found a bug that will block assess to the AdSense Deluxe plugin leaving me to wonder what else is wrong? So I don’t know about this version,  I guess upgrade at your own risk or wait it out.

WordPress 2.8.1 fixes many bugs and tightens security for plugin administration pages. Core Security Technologies notified us that admin pages added by certain plugins could be viewed by unprivileged users, resulting in information being leaked. Not all plugins are vulnerable to this problem, but we advise upgrading to 2.8.1 to be safe.

What else is new since 2.8? Read through the highlights below, or view all changes since 2.8

  • Certain themes were calling get_categories() in such a way that it would fail in 2.8. 2.8.1 works around this so these themes won’t have to change.
  • Dashboard memory usage is reduced. Some people were running out of memory when loading the dashboard, resulting in an incomplete page.
  • The automatic upgrade no longer accidentally deletes files when cleaning up from a failed upgrade.
  • A problem where the rich text editor wasn’t being loaded due to compression issues has been worked around.
  • Extra security has been put in place to better protect you from plugins that do not do explicit permission checks.
  • Translation of role names fixed.
  • wp_page_menu() defaults to sorting by the user specified menu order rather than the page title.
  • Upload error messages are now correctly reported.
  • Autosave error experienced by some IE users is fixed.
  • Styling glitch in the plugin editor fixed.
  • SSH2 filesystem requirements updated.
  • Switched back to curl as the default transport.
  • Updated the translation library to avoid a problem with mbstring.func_overload.
  • Stricter inline style sanitization.
  • Stricter menu security.
  • Disabled code highlighting due to browser incompatibilities.
  • RTL layout fixes.
  • Read more about all changes since 2.8

Once again, I’d wait to upgrade. I’m reading way too much problems here and there… but hey, I might just be chicken!

I just recently upgraded to a newer version of WordPress but I don’t think it is this latest one. All I know is that I LOVE it, it’s a huge improvement over the last one I had. Much more organized and clean, and I can do so many other things now. Amazing.

Yes i have asked by coder to upgrade my theme of WP to the new version. I hope that there won’t be any bugs in it. If it is so then it would be a great news.

It is scary that they release updates with so many bugs. Was the automatic upgrade plugin deleting random files?? I have been using it a lot and I wonder what files I could be missing then.

I used to skip 3 to 4 updates, till i upgraded again, but with the new automatic update, it is just so simple. So this one was on my nserver the day they released it ;)

Great write-up. I had some issues with the previous update, so I think I’m going to wait it out for a while. Seems like all I do now is update wordpress.

Our blog was recently hacked so I have been patiently waiting for this new version. I will not upgrade to the newest version due to bugs. I wait until the .1 version comes out. I am upgrading this week.

Looks like some important patches. A few of these should have been handled in the .0 release. Too many patches too often. I’m hoping that WordPress will get good enough that these patches slow down and address security issues only.

Still WPCache isn’t part of the central system…..

i also upgraded to wp 2.8 , although there is not much difference in the features but i think this upgrade has more to do with the internal security features , and those are not visible outside and i heard about improved ajax navigation

I’m glad they keep updating it relatively frequent. It keeps getting better and better.

I upgraded as soon as possible because when I can choose between being safe or losing some functionality I’d rather be safe. Even if it means that some of the stuff will cause problems.

Great insights! I have updated my blog recently. It looks like pretty good. Thanks for this information.

I love WordPress, but the updates do happen a little frequently for my taste. I understand that it’s needed and appreciate the effort and speed, but plugins and themes get broken so often and we end up wasting time making stuff work again. Ah well. :)

After switching from wp2.7 to wp2.8 I encountered a whole mess. Really. About 4 plugins that I depend on a lot stopped to work. And somehow even supercache got corrupted.

It got fixed and now I am in a paranoiac state to upgrade to 2.8.1

I have installed wordpress 2.8.1, but I lost my themes. The theme can not be viewed. Is everybody having the same problem?

And now wp 2.8.2 has been released.

I have seen a custom default theme get replaced with the normal default theme. If you customized the default theme and didn’t rename it or at least have a backup it could be history for good. The only possibility is contact your hosting account and see if they can restore a backup of your site priopr to the upgrade.

Always, always, always make a backup of your files before any upgrade.

But you have lost them or you just cannot see them?

I have made the backup. I don’t lose the contents. The problem is my blog has no theme now, it looks ugly just all white in the background. And I don’t know how to fix it.

I addressed how to fix that issue in a recent post. I doubt future releases of WP will address a plugins compatibility. Upgrade WP, fix the plugin or find a substitute.

I still am using wordpress version 2.3. I was reluctant to change to 2.7 because 2.3 has everything I want and I heard that the newer versions have a lot of problems. I’m thinkin about version 2.81 and making the switch. Thanks for the info.
