Keep A WordPress Post On The Top Of Others

There may be times when you want one particular WordPress post to appear on the very top even after other posts are made. That option was once done with various plugins but now it is a built-in feature in WordPress version 2.7. This short WordPress guide will show you just how easy it is to do.

Why would you want to have a “Sticky Post” in the first place? There may be several reasons and the first that comes to mind is to have a WordPress powered website that looks more like a website rather than a blog. You can have the same content always displayed on the very top of the main page promoting your products and services and then below that the traditional blog loop. Still getting the advantage of the ever changing content, yet letting your visitors see what you want them to see first.

The option for this is in WordPress version 2.7 is on the right side of the post editor under the Publish module. Click the Edit link next to Visibility in the Publish module and simply check the box next to Stick this post to the front page . You can also choose any previously published post to be sticky by simply editing the post and choosing this option. Make sure to update the post for changes to take effect. Of course just reverse the option to remove a Sticky Post. If you have a newer version of WordPress, that isn’t out as of this post but WordPress will eventually change, look for the “Sticky” option under the Publish module or menu.

Heathrow I noticed you said:

I have a lot of important posts that I want to keep on top.

I didn’t test to see how it handles multiple posts, my guess is the newest would be on top? Let us know how it works out if you try more than one post on top.

I don’t think I’ve ever stikied a post =)

This is brilliant feature. Thank you for the roadmap. Now the only problem is that I lack flagship content that I could show to everybody visiting my blog. We all know what’s the remedy for that problem – new brain and faster fingers.

This option comes with WP 2.7 and I love it. When I moved my blogger blog to WP, I created a post describing about the process and made it as a sticky post. A great feature from WP!

a definitely good trick. any idea how will the plugin react when you will have selected to show a specific number of posts per page, and do you have nay idea how to make it permanent , i.e. just like ads stay forever, on a specific section of page,

btw, what made me notice this was the text ads of accessory ads you have on the side

very eye catching. and i hope very profitable.

Yes, I mean you really don’t wanna have sticky post at all, let alone on top. I think I should be able to adjust it as to how I want it to be, and this just the trick I need!
Thanks so much!

just started working with WordPress and like it so far. I would like to keep one post always on top as it acts as the intro to the site. I’d prefer to keep it as a post so other on our board can edit it instead of hard-wiring it into the php.

The thought the easiest way to keep a certain post on top is just open it,click save and it is on top again… but you have to do this all the time, so I am glad I stumbled upon this blog. Thx..

Yeah it is great. It works much better than setting the date on the post to 1999. I find it faster this way…less buttons to click. (I am very lazy)

Does this work the same way for WP 2.8.4?

I’ve been using a similar method to keep my home page content static. I just create a “home” page and then a blog page. I then go into the settings and tell WP to place all of my new posts onto the blog page, and not the home page.

But I would prefer to use your method, if it can be done in the newest version (which I will be upgrading to next month).

Thanks for the tips!

First why are you waiting until next month to upgrade, second why the F even bother to ask and why not just just try it? Do you have a brain or are you, a complete moron?

God I hate stupid people!

Wow..exactly what I was looking for. Knew I’d seen the option somewhere on WP …but couldn’t find it again. You covered everything..clear, concise..and the graphics helped greatly! Thanx for restoring my sanity from the hunt!
