WordPress Version 2.5 Where Is The BlogRoll

What happened to the WordPress blogroll in version 2.5? Its still there and, in my opinion a better way. The blogroll in WordPress version 2.5 is now called Links and additional functionality has been added to better manage the categories you can place the links under.

Getting to the new Links menu is under Manage then the Links sub panel. To edit an existing link simply click the name of the link (not the URL) on the left to open it.

Adding new links categories as as simple as ever now that it has its own sub panel that is also under the main Manage panel. You can even rename the default Blogroll category to what ever you want. I suggest you only place links in one category so they show only once in the sidebar under the specified category.

As I research WordPress Version 2.5 more the more I find to like. Although this site still operates on a few version removed from even 2.3.3 I know the time is coming and I have been contemplating the upgrade for this and my other blogs.

  1. Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the link. Your readers might also be interested in a post I guest-wrote for HackWordPress.com called How to Import Links in WordPress 2.5, which explains where the blogroll importer went to.

  2. Max have you tried the wordpress automatic plugin? I upgraded all my wordpress installations to 2.5 using that plugin. It worked ok on all 5 different themes i was using.

  3. Yes I have tried it on earlier versions, but I am so used to upgrading manually with ftp that I don’t bother with automated plugins. A manual upgrade takes so little time anyway. The time consuming thing is making sure all the plugins work.

  4. there are lots of security holes that 2.3.3 patches up. you should upgrade soon. One of the holes allows someone to use xml rpc to edit your previous posts… so they can change your links without you knowing!

  5. Any clue how to get the addlink bookmarklet back?

  6. Any clue how to get the addlink bookmarklet back?

No clue here because I don’t know what it is.

  7. Understandable. It was just a cool feature I got used to before 2.5. If anyone hears something, could you let me know?
