Clean Up WordPress Database
WordPress has gone through many updates over the past year or so and if you have gone through the updates along with using and updating multiple plugins, you may find your WordPress blog or site to be running pretty sluggish. You could even experience database errors after an upgrade, especially with version 2.7. What I am going to attempt to explain in this WordPress guide is not for the total newbie and some technical knowledge will be needed if you want to attempt to do this.
Backup WordPress Database
Backing up your WordPress database is something most of us fail to do on a regular basis. I have yet to need a database backup to restore a catastrophic lose but have used them to move a WordPress blog to a new server and I always backup the database before an upgrade. There are two methods to backup your database one is manually in the hosting account control panel the other is with a plugin. I like the manual method and will cover it in this guide.
WordPress Plugin Updates Not Working
Have you recently upgraded your WordPress blog and found that you can no longer automatically upgrade your plugins? There can be many different reasons for upgrade plugins not to work but here are two plugins to check for if you recently upgraded to WordPress version 2.7.
WordPress 2.7 Dashboard Changes
There are some big changes coming in WordPress version 2.7. One of the biggest changes I noticed so far, is the look and arrangement of the dashboard. There is also the inclusion of few new features like automatic upgrades and the QuickPress feature on the main WordPress dashboard screen.
Keep WordPress Plugins Up To Date
Keeping your WordPress blog up to date cam seem like a never ending task, especially if you use a lot of plugins. It seems like WordPress is coming out with incremental updates almost every week anymore, with that comes plugin updates to keep up with changes. The good news is that WordPress now has built-in automatic plugin upgrades.
WordPress Automatic Upgrade Coming In Next Version
If you are like me and dread upgrading WordPress to the latest version, then version 2.7 may be the last one that you need to update manually. I usually put off the upgrades mostly because of all the plugin issues that can arise. I guess I just don’t want to spend hours tracking down the fixes for plugin compatibility issues. Even though that can happen with an automated upgrade, once you get everything stabilized in the latest version small incremental upgrades should be easier to deal with.
The WordPress Upgrade Aftermath
In the previous post I talked about all the reasons to upgrade to version 2.6.+. After doing a few and researching some issues I thought I may warn you of what you may be in for.
