Upload WordPress Themes and Plugins From The Dashboard
Note! The plugin referenced in this post is outdated for WordPress version 2.7+. There is a similar replacement explained on this post:
How To Add WordPress Themes From The Dashboard
I am constantly messing with my blogs and trying new plugins and checking out new WordPress themes. Up until lately I used a plugin called the Installer to upload WordPress themes and plugins from the dashboard. But the Installer plugin is no longer supported by the author and it is very hard to find.
Not to worry though because there is another plugin that does the job just fine called OneClick. Taken from the authors site:
“Oneclick is my first wordpress plugin. It allows uploading of a plugin or theme without the need of manually uploading by FTP, allowing the upload from the Admin panel. All you have to do is browse for the zip file and click “upload” and the plugin does the rest.” – Anirudh Sanjeev
This should be the last WordPress plugin you need to install (if your hosting account allows .php uploads. More on that later…
Installation is the normal plugin installation procedure:
- FTP upload the entire Oneclick folder to wp-content/plugins.
- CHMOD (change the file permissions) of the following folders to 777
- wp-content/themes/
- wp-content/plugins/
- wp-content/plugins/oneclick/
- Activate “OneClick Installer” from your dashboard plugins menu.
Using Oneclick is pretty straight forward, from the main Dashboard panel click the OneClick Install subpanel. Browse to the .zip file to upload, choose the file type from the drop down box and click Upload. OneClick only supports uploading .zip files at this time so there is no reason to inzip any of the plugins and themes before using OneClick.
After the file is uploaded you can activate the theme or plugin from their respective panels. If you don’t get a notice like show below then you may have the same server side issues I had with my hosting account.
I had to contact my hosting account and explain to them that WordPress could not upload files from within the dashboard. You can test this before you install OneClick by trying to upload a file from the write post screen just below the post editor. If you can’t upload ask your hosting account to fix this probably because of security issues for access to the tmp folder.
OneClick is one of the best plugins for people who are always tinkering with their WordPress blog. Grab it over at Thought Outflux.

i was looking for this for a very long time awesome job!!! THX!
Hey,
Had a quick question since I noticed this post was from 2007.
We’re helping teachers and educators learn how to create school and class websites using WordPress as an engine and were wondering if you’ve found a way to auto-install themes from the dashboard without having to go in and CHMOD the folders?
We use Plugin Central which requires WP 2.5 or higher, but it lets you just type in the name of the plugin and it’ll search the internet, upload and install the plugin. Point and click kinda stuff.
We’ll check out oneclick, but we were just wondering if you know of anything new that’s come out for the latest versions of WP for uploading themes.
Appreciate your ideas. Cheers, Kisu
(Also appreciate your generous comment link policy)
Hey Kisu, Yes there is another plugin called One Click Plugin Updater. The plugins site doesn’t tell you all it can do but from the plugins description in the WordPress dashboard:
It also adds a submenu under Plugins to install a plugin and another submenu under Design to install themes.
I have found that CHMOD settings depend on some server settings, some work without changing the permissions some do. Get it here: One Click Plugin Updater
I must admit that this is a much easier method compared to the stuff that i do. Any idea about some new plug ins that could be useful?
Sounds great, I must install that!

I have tried it but it doesn´t work. I always get an error in the database.
Errors with uploads are usually caused by security settings on the hosting account. This plugin is outdated now and has been replaced, please visit:

This version is also very fickle and I suggest you contact your hosting account and tell them what you are trying to do and the exact error message.
Ok thanks, I´ll try again
It´s a very good plugin, I save many time. It has worked immediatly. Thanks!

Very nice blog! Just bookmarked! Thanks a lot!
Hi. I’ve got a quick question. Can you upload plugins for a wordpress hosted account? I don’t understand how to upload via ftp if it isn’t my domain. Please clear things up for me.
Duane, no you can’t add any themes or plugins to a WordPress.com hosted blog.
So I will need to purchase a domain name and hosting in order to upload plugins and themes?
Yes Duane, you need a self-hosted WordPress blog to take advantage of it’s advanced features.
Hello Duane,
it´s in your interest to get selfhoted WordPress Blog if you want to have a chance to get good positions n the serach engines.
Mark
After having installed, do I have to let the CHMOD on 777?
Isn´t it dangerous?
Baugeld, You can try to use it without changing file permissions first. Changing the FOLDER permission isn’t as dangerous as the actual files.
But isn’t it to risky keeping all the folders and files unprotected?
I didn’t say to make the FILES writable just the folders so files can be added to them. Read the actual words people.
The plugin this post is referring to is no longer supported in WordPress as of 2.6.3 and was replaced by another but the function will be part of the core in version 2.7 so no plugins will be needed going forward.
Comments closed, this plugin is obsolete.
[...] Re: Help with WordPress 2.7 – Themes? Hey, I just did a quick google search and found something you might like. It’s a plugin you install (can use WP 2.7′s upload plugin feature) and that will let you upload themes and plugins from the dashboard. I’m not sure if it works with 2.7, but it’s worth a shot so you don’t have to always mess around with FTP! Upload WordPress Themes and Plugins From The Dashboard | WordPress Max [...]
