WordPress First Full Post Remainder As Excerpts
As the title states I have been trying to customize WordPress and messing with my themes template to get the main blog page to show the entire latest post and the rest as only excerpts. Digging through the WordPress.org forums I found just enough information to really make a mess of my blog. I also noticed that the question was asked a few times over there and well… lets just say the response was a bit condescending. Like the answer was so simple that if you had to ask you didn’t deserve to even be on the forum.
As I was researching something completely unrelated I came across Dane Morgan’s Blog Strokes. I noticed that he was displaying his main page exactly how I wanted to show mine. So I sent Dane an email asking how he was showing the latest full post and the remainder as excerpts.
Dane not only answered my email but then went as far as creating a new post: How To Mix Full Posts And Excerpts On Your WordPress Home Page . His instructions not only explained how to do it but also provided the actual PHP code to do it.
It did take a little trial and error on my part to implement it and the results can now be seen on the WordPress Max home page. If you are going to do this I suggest that you add your own excerpts when writing posts to control what is show under the title of the post on the main blog page.
The file that needs changed is index.php and since Dane helped me with this you will need to go to Blog Strokes to learn more.
Edit: The links to the instructions are no longer available and I have taken them down. I have found a plugin that does the same thing but a lot easier. You can find it here: Homepage Excerpts

Thanks for the mention, Jeff.
The blog looks real good too. Did you have to go through and add the excerpts in for your posts?

Hello Dane, No I didn’t need add excerpts because I add one to every post since starting this blog.
I wish I did it on my other blogs though.

Good policy. I always add them because I use excerpts on my category and tag pages to keep the actual post text unique the single post page.
Hey, I started a WordPress designers community at BUMPzee. I’d love to have you consider joining it. I do require blogs that join it to have a widget on the blog, but I find that the readers from BUMPzee tend to be more active participants than those from any of the others I’ve tried.

Drive-By comments will be deleted! Like "Thanks for sharing", "Nice post", or any other text that doesn't contribute to the discussion. If you ask a very specific question about your particular WordPress theme, it will probably be deleted. I can fix your WordPress site but for a price. If you ask a question like "Why don't my blog work right", it will be deleted. If you ask a question about your WordPress site without a leaving a link to it, it will be deleted. The point is to ask questions and or comment on the the actual content of the post, and to please use some common sense. All comments are moderated and will appear when approved. Thank you.
