WordPress Guide To Social Bookmarking

Social bookmarking is probably the quickest and easiest way to generate traffic and attention to your blog or any website for that matter. Social bookmarking, I guess would be considered a tactic. And there is no better way to take advantage of than using the available and the power of .

Although there are numerous social bookmarking plugins available for WordPress the very first option I want to share with you is not a plugin at all but a web site that will bookmark over 20 social bookmarking services at one time. To get started go to onlywire.com and join Onlywire.

After joining Onlywire you will be presented a list social bookmarking services with two boxes next to them, clicking on the name of a site will open that site in a new window. Join the site, get your username and Password and put it in the corresponding list back on the Onlywire web page. You can join as many of the list you want. It is going to take you some time to join all these sites and save your information on Onlywire, but doing this little bit of work upfront now will reduce your social bookmarking in the future. You may want to click Save My Logins after each one you add in case you close the page or your Windows-based PC locks up or crashes. A bit of sarcasm there at Bill Gates expense, sorry Bill.

Now here comes the cool part, at the top of the Onlywire you will see two bookmark tools like this:socbook1.gif

Now simply drag one or both of these tools into your browsers tool bar and drop it there. The Save Page (fr) tool bar opens a small frame above the page you are bookmarking, the Save Page (std) tool bar will open a larger new window. I find it easier on the eyes and to see all my tags using the Save Page (std) tool bar.

To bookmark your latest blog post it is very important to first click the title of the the blog post to open it in it’s own page. Remember you want to bookmark the URL of each new post, not the URL of your main blogs URL over and over! Now you can click either the Save Page (fr) or the Save Page (std) tool bar in your browsers tool bar.

socbook21.gif

The Title and URL boxes should be filled in already and all that is left is fill in the tags box. The tags will need to be properly formatted, in this case multiple tags need to be space separated. To join two words as one tag phrase use a hyphen between the words. An example to tag the phrase WordPress plugin guides would be: WordPress-plugin-guides

I also suggest to copy the first paragraph of the blog post and pasting it into the Clipping / Comments / Notes section as well.

Now its time to add your to a few more social bookmarking sites using a few WordPress . The social bookmarking plugin I usually add to new blogs for my customers when I install a new WordPress blog, or configure their existing blog is called Share This. I really liked the Gregarious plugin that but it is not stable with WordPress version 2.3 so until it is upgraded Share This works just fine.

The share this plugin adds a little green icon at the bottom of each post as seen here on my blog. Clicking it will open a list of social bookmarking sites that you and your readers can use to bookmark your blog posts. Again be sure to have the blog post open it its own URL before bookmarking. The Share This plugin may have some of the same sites in it that you saved to in Onlywire, but don’t worry if you double dip, the sites usually let you know if already bookmarked the URL.

The musts in the Share This list are: Digg, StumbleUpon, Technorati and Google Bookmarks. The others should also be done if time allows. Play close attention to how these sites want the tags formatted. Each site may be different and should have instructions how to add tags. Also consider that most of these social Bookmarking sites have a tool bar option that can be added similar to what I discussed above for Onlywire.

Other, but by any means not the only, WordPress plugins or widgets for social bookmarking are Social Bookmarks, WP PlugIM (the blue icon shown at the beginning of this post) and bumpzee.com

Write WordPress Blog Posts That Top The Search Engines

Once a self-hosted blog is setup and properly configured with the right SEO and social bookmarking , the next step to get your posts to top Goggle. This is often one of the most overlooked but easiest things to do.

The main factor, after your blog is properly configured, is the title of your posts. Consider the title very carefully. Consider this post for example the title, “Write WordPress Blog Posts That Top The Search Engines”. If I had called it “” it would be way down it the . Probably never to be found by anyone searching Google. My bet (or hope) here is that a search for “WordPress Posts That Top Search Engines” will reach the first page on Goggle in less than 24 hours.

*Edit - It did top Goggle for the title, click it to see the Google search results. Write WordPress Blog Posts That Top The Search Engines

So now you may say “Yeah, but how many searches are done for that term.” Well you would be surprised, and a top 5 ranking for a bunch of less searched terms is much better than trying to get a more competitive term to the top.

Write specific, targeted, informative posts. Use the main keywords in the title, and again in the post itself. If you look carefully at this post my keywords are WordPress Blog and Search Engines, and I have used those terms as much possible without overtly stuffing them in the post.

Write general information, with general, non-specific titles and your WordPress posts will be mired at the bottom of the search engines. Provide good specific content and keyword rich titles, and your posts will make it to the top, and possibly linked to and shared by others.

WordPress Post Navigation Looks Bad On Single Pages

You may have seen it on some blogs and maybe even your own: The navigation links to next and previous posts appear to be jumbled or even wrapped around each other looking terrible. This is usually on the default theme but can happen on other themes as well. This simple will make your next and previous navigation links look much better in single posts.

To check your blog open a post in the loop that has posts before and after it. Here is a sample of good navigation links shown on the single post page or single.php:

nav1.gif

If the links don’t look like they do in the above image the fix is quite simple. Open the single page template for your theme and find the below code. Simply place a break between the previous and next posts as shown in red text below. It may also be necessary to place another break at the very end of the code to push the post content down away from the navigation links. (not shown)

<?php if (have_posts()) : while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?>
<div class=”navigation”>
<div class=”alignleft”><?php previous_post_link(’« %link’) ?></div><br>
<div class=”alignright”><?php next_post_link(’%link »’) ?></div>
</div>

In order to edit your themes template files from the the proper file permissions(CHMOD) must be set in your blogs hosting account. Usually changing them to 666 is good enough to be able to edit them. The proper path to edit the themes files are your blogs directory, the wp-content folder, themes, your theme. In that folder you should at least CHMOD the single.php file or the entire folder if you want to change other files.

blog/wp-content/themes/CurrentTheme

At the WordPress dashboard go to Presentation, Theme Editor. Look on the right for single.php or the Single Post file. Click it, make your changes and click Update File on the bottom right. If you are uncomfortable editing these files and don’t want to render your blog useless you may want to make a backup copy of any file before you edit it.

To make a backup, copy the contents of the file and paste it into a text file on your computer and save it. Then should things go wrong  just paste the original file back into the Theme Editor to restore it’s original state.
